TEATRO SATANICO - FATWA - Written by: Rexington Steel

By far the most enthralling and engaging Teatro Satanico (IT) release to date. It feels as if these gentlemen are on the upward swing of an incrementally more brilliant spiral. “Fatwa” picks up where their masterful picture-disc “Kali Yuga A-Go-Go” left off. One of the fondest memories I take along in life is when Mr. Granziera let me have a private listen of this track before it was released. I felt as if I was then privy to soundtrack material for some multi-million dollar action film of the highest caliber. This album is an extension, an amplification of the sex appeal, the elaborate sequencing production, the subtle, refined masculinity, and profound melodic throb of “Kali Yuga”. An incredible result in a direction that might have been hinted at by the last couple of Teatro releases, but I don’t think that any of us expected such a solid.. Dance album. Much more to it than just that of course… This is an album of complexity, of soul, of groove, and of life. It touches on ground that few could, like Frank Tovey, a man who could draw from you a smile just as easily as a tear. I felt this feeling upon my initial listen of this work. It doesn’t let you go. “Fatwa” not only touches one on musical terms, but also provokes on thematic ones. As powerful as an actual condemnation, a proclamation that some Islamic force of high order wants you dead is, this work is much more life-affirming, much more influential toward the will to run and live each day and amplify the strength of your resolve. A work that is as empowering as it is inspiring. Up to par with the best Brian Eno work, the most compelling moment, like “La Visione e La Voce” feels like it was done with an up to date approach similar to what Eno took to make “Low” one of David Bowie’s darkest, but also most exploratory albums. The tenuous hold this album can grasp the listener is uncanny, the highs are high, but the lows are only like a stripping down of material that is the densest concentration of pristine bass-hooks I have ever heard in any album of any genre. The intricacy of every single percussive element is heavily flexed. One certainly has to appreciate it when an artist can seemingly make anything percussive. It’s obvious these men can. There is still a highly persistent need for sonic exploration here, but now, it is paired with an impressive discipline in structure. That is what makes “Fatwa” so powerful. I don’t know how fair it is to say that this is their best album, but it’s certainly being touted that way on the Old Europa site. I can only say I agree. Wholeheartedly.
